Origin of Mother’s Day

母ははの日ひは5月がつの第だい2日曜日にちようびで、今年ことしは5月がつ14日にちです。

1907年ねん、アメリカに住すんでいた女性じょせいが苦労くろうのすえに自分じぶんを育そだててくれた母ははの死しをいたみ、母親ははおやが好すきだった白しろいカーネーションを教会きょうかいにかざったのがはじまりとされています。

Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday of May, and this year it falls on May 14th.

In 1907, a woman living in the United States mourned the death of her mother, who had raised her through many hardships, and began the tradition of placing white carnations, her mother’s favorite flower, in church.

母ははの日ひには、母親ははおやが元気げんきな場合ばあいは赤あかいカーネーションを、亡なくなっている場合ばあいは白しろいカーネーションを胸むねにかざるようになり、やがてプレゼントとしてカーネーションをおくる風習ふうしゅうへとつながっていきました。

On Mother’s Day, it became customary to wear a red carnation on your chest if your mother is alive, and a white carnation if she has passed away, and eventually this led to the tradition of giving carnations as a gift.

日本にほんに母ははの日ひがつたわったのは、大正時代たいしょうじだいです。国民的こくみんてきな行事ぎょうじとなったのは、1937年ねん、お菓子かし会社がいしゃが母ははの日ひを提唱ていしょうしてからのことです。昔むかしは赤あかいカーネーションの花はなをおくることが多おおくありました。

私わたしは小学生しょうがくせいのころ、カーネーションを花屋はなやへ買かいに行いって母ははにおくった記憶きおくがあります。

Mother’s Day was introduced to Japan during the Taisho era. It became a national event in 1937 when a confectionery company promoted the holiday. In the past, it was common to give red carnations as gifts. I have a memory of buying carnations at a flower shop and giving them to my mother when I was in elementary school.

今いまは、デパートには、「母ははの日ひ」商戦しょうせんとして、さまざまな品物しなものがならべてあります。お花はな、お菓子かし、化粧品けしょうひん、リラックスグッズ（入浴剤にゅうよくざいなど）が人気にんきです。子こどもなら「肩かたたたき券けん」をあげてもよろこばれます。

Nowadays, department stores display various items for the “Mother’s Day” sales promotion. Flowers, sweets, cosmetics, and relaxation goods such as bath salts are popular. Children are also appreciated to give “shoulder massage coupons”.

何なにをえらんだらいいのかわからない息子むすこ（男性だんせい）は、お花はなをおくることが多おおいようです。

娘むすめ（女性じょせい）なら、母親ははおやの好このみにあわせてちょっとおいしいお菓子かしや季節きせつにあわせた日傘ひがさやぼうし、スカーフなどもいいですね。

5月がつは気候きこうのいい時期じきなので、いっしょにでかけたり、食事しょくじをして交流こうりゅうをふかめる機会きかいにもなっていると思おもいます。

If a son (male) is unsure what to choose, it seems that giving flowers is a common choice.

If you are a daughter (female), a slightly fancy sweet treat, a seasonal parasol, hat, scarf, or other item that suits the mother’s taste is also a good idea.

父ちちの日ひは6月がつの第だい3日曜日にちようびで、今年ことしは6月がつ18日にちです。

父ちちの日ひが誕生たんじょうしたきっかけは、ある女性じょせいが男手おとこでひとつで6人にんの子こどもたちを育そだてた父親ちちおやをたたえようと1909年ねんに牧師協会ぼくしきょうかいへ「父親ちちおやへ感謝かんしゃする日ひもつくってほしい」と嘆願たんがんしたことがはじまりだそうです。

Father’s Day is on the third Sunday of June, and this year it falls on June 18th.

The origin of Father’s Day is said to have started in 1909 when a woman asked a pastor’s association to create a day to honor fathers, in recognition of a father who raised six children alone.

日本にほんの父ちちの日ひには何なにをあげればいい？　
What kind of gifts are available for Father’s Day in Japan?

日本にほんで一般的いっぱんてきな行事ぎょうじとしてひろまったのは1980年代ねんだいに入はいってからだといわれています。

子こどもは幼稚園ようちえんで作品さくひんをつくり父親ちちおやにプレゼントをします。絵えのついたコップやタオルです。小学生しょうがくせいになると、ウチの子こどもはプレゼントをしなくなりました。

It is said that it wasn’t until the 1980s that it became widespread as a common event in Japan.

Children make crafts at kindergarten and give presents to their fathers. These are cups or towels with pictures on them. When they become elementary school students, my child stopped giving presents.

大人おとなになった私わたしは、父親ちちおやにお酒さけやお菓子かし、旅行券りょこうけんをプレゼントしたことがあります。スーツをきて働はたらいている父親ちちおやなら、ネクタイをおくることも多おおいかもしれません。

6月がつは暑あつくなりはじめるので、ビールなどのお酒さけはよろこばれることが多おおいようです。お酒屋さかやさんに行いったら、好このみにあわせて相談そうだんにのってくれるでしょう。
