What is “おはなみ(Ohanami)”?

みなさん、日本にほんの国くにの花はな（国花こっか）はどんな花はなだと思おもいますか？

日本にほんの国花こっかは『桜さくら』です。桜さくらの花言葉はなことばは「優美ゆうび」「清きよらか」「崇高すうこう」「短命たんめい」「別離べつり」などです。これらの言葉ことばは日本人にほんじんの心こころをあらわしていると言いわれています。

Which flower is considered the national flower of Japan?

It is the cherry blossom, also known as sakura. The cherry blossom represents various sentiments in Japanese culture, such as elegance, purity, nobility, transience, and separation, which are said to reflect the Japanese people’s values.

日本にほんには桜さくらの花はなを楽たのしみながら外そとで飲食いんしょくや会話かいわを楽たのしむ『お花見はなみ』とよばれる伝統的でんとうてきな春はるの行事ぎょうじがあります。

桜さくらが咲さきはじめる3月がつ下旬げじゅんから満開まんかいになる4月がつ上旬じょうじゅんの間あいだに、親したしい友人ゆうじんや家族かぞくとともに公園こうえんや川沿かわぞいなどの桜さくらの花はながきれいな場所ばしょでピクニックをするのが一般的いっぱんてきです。

明あかるい時間じかんに桜さくらを楽たのしむ人ひともいれば、夜よるの桜さくら（夜桜よざくら）を楽たのしむ人ひともいます。

In Japan, there is a traditional spring event called “Ohanami(Hanami),” which involves enjoying food and drinks outdoors while admiring the beauty of cherry blossoms.

It is common for people to have picnics with close friends and family in places like parks and along riverbanks where cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April.

Some people enjoy cherry blossoms during the daytime, while others prefer to appreciate them at night under the illumination of lanterns.

お花見はなみの歴史れきし　
History of “おはなみ(Ohanami)”

『お花見はなみ』は今いまから約やく1300年前ねんまえの奈良時代ならじだいに貴族きぞくが山里やまざとの花はなを楽たのしむ習慣しゅうかんがはじまりだとされています。

現代げんだいでは『お花見はなみ』の花はなは桜さくらをさしますが、当時とうじは中国ちゅうごくから伝来でんらいした梅うめの花はなを楽たのしむことだったそうで、桜さくらの木きは「神木しんぼく（神様かみさまの木き）」として大切たいせつにあつかわれていたそうです。

It is said that “Ohanami” began about 1300 years ago during the Nara period when aristocrats would admire the flowers in the mountains.

At that time, the flower to be admired was not cherry blossoms, but plum blossoms that were introduced from China. However, cherry blossom trees were treated as “sacred trees” and were highly valued.

その後ご、平安時代へいあんじだいになると、貴族きぞくはしだいに『お花見はなみ』＝桜さくらの花はなを見みて楽たのしむようになり「桜さくらの宴うたげ（桜さくらパーティー）」を開ひらくようになりました。

平安時代へいあんじだいに書かかれた有名ゆうめいな物語ものがたり『源氏げんじ物語ものがたり』にも、桜さくらの下したでの宴うたげ（パーティー）の様子ようすがえがかれています。

During the Heian period, the aristocrats gradually began to enjoy cherry blossoms, and they started to hold “Sakura no utage(Sakura parties)” where they would admire the cherry blossoms.

Famous stories from the Heian period, such as “The Tale of Genji,” also depict scenes of parties under the cherry blossoms.

このように鑑賞かんしょうして楽たのしむ目的もくてきで『花見はなみ』をおこなっていた貴族きぞくに対たいして、農民のうみんはまたちがう目的もくてきで『お花見はなみ』をしていました。

春はるは農民のうみんにとって田たんぼや畑はたけで作物さくもつを育そだてはじめる季節きせつです。作物さくもつが無事ぶじに育そだってほしいという気持きもちから、春はるは野のや山やまへでかけて花はなを楽たのしむ『野遊のあそび』や『山遊やまあそび』がおこなわれていました。

野山のやまの桜さくらを楽たのしむことで、神様かみさまといっしょに過すごし、作物さくもつの豊作ほうさくを願ねがったのかもしれませんね。

その後ごの江戸時代えどじだいに『お花見はなみ』は純粋じゅんすいに桜さくらの花はなを楽たのしむ春はるの行事ぎょうじとしてさまざまな階層かいそうの人々ひとびとにも広ひろがっていったそうです。

While the aristocrats enjoyed “Hanami” for the purpose of appreciation and enjoyment, the farmers had a different purpose.

Spring is the season when farmers start cultivating their crops in the fields and rice paddies. To pray for a good harvest, they would go out to the mountains and fields to enjoy flowers in activities called “No asobi” and “Yama asobi.”

They may have enjoyed the cherry blossoms in the mountains and fields to spend time with the gods and pray for a bountiful harvest.

During the Edo period, “Ohanami” became a spring event for people of various social classes to enjoy cherry blossoms purely for their beauty.

Famous Hanami Spots in Japan

日本にほんには花見はなみで有名ゆうめいな場所ばしょが全国ぜんこくに数多かずおおくあります。例たとえば東京とうきょうだと以下いかの場所ばしょが有名ゆうめいです。

There are many famous cherry blossoms viewing spots throughout Japan. In Tokyo, for example, the following places are well-known:

そのほかにも代々木よよぎ公園こうえん・六義園りくぎえん・六本木ろっぽんぎヒルズ毛利庭園もうりていえん・昭和記念しょうわきねん公園こうえん・明治神宮外苑めいじじんぐうがいえんなどなど数多かずおおくのお花見はなみスポットがあります。

In addition to these spots, there are many other cherry blossom viewing locations throughout Japan, including Yoyogi Park, Rikugien, Mori Garden in Roppongi Hills, Showa Memorial Park, and Meiji Jingu Gaien.
