今回は、「観葉植物」についてお話ししたいと思います。

さっそくですが、みなさん観葉植物は好きですか。それとも、観葉植物ってなんですか。と思ったでしょうか。

ではまず、観葉植物について説明しましょう。観葉植物とは、植物を見て、楽しんで育てる植物のことです。
日本では、観葉植物を家のなかで育てる人が多いです。そして、家ですごすことが多くなったコロナ禍でたくさんの人が観葉植物に興味をもつようになりました。

In Japan, many people grow indoor house plants in their homes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, where people are spending more time at home, many have become interested in indoor house plants.

私も部屋で11個の観葉植物を育てています。そして、観葉植物を部屋におくと、いいことがたくさんあります。
I myself have 11 indoor plants in my room. There are many benefits to having indoor plants in your home.
１つめは、部屋の空気がきれいになります。
たくさんある観葉植物のなかでもとくに空気をきれいにしてくれる植物があります。それは、サンセベリア、スパティフィラム、ドラセナ・マッサンゲアナ、アレカヤシなどです。
The first benefit is that they help purify the air in the room.
There are some plants that are particularly effective at cleaning the air, such as Sansevieria, Spathiphyllum, Dracaena Massangeana, and Areca Palm.

そして３つめは、植物を育てることでよろこびを感じられる。
すこしずつ成長する植物たちを見ていると、だんだんと「あ、こんなところから新しい葉がでている！」や「葉がどんどん大きくなってきたな〜。」などと、植物たちを好きになります。「私の観葉植物かわいいなー！」となりますよ。
And the third benefit is that growing plants can bring joy.

あとは「盆栽」とよばれる植物もおすすめです。古くから楽しまれてきた、日本の伝統文化です。
松の木や桜の木などを育てると日本らしさを感じることができます。
I also recommend plants known as “bonsai.” Bonsai is a traditional Japanese culture that has been enjoyed for a long time.
By growing trees such as pine and cherry blossom, you can feel the Japanese spirit.

そしてみなさん、「花言葉」を知っていますか。花言葉とは、植物や花にあたえられた、象徴的な意味をもつ言葉です。
植物や花の花言葉を知ると、もっと植物や花のことを知り、好きになるはずです。
Do you know about “flower language?” Flower language is a symbolic word given to plants or flowers that has a certain meaning.
If you know the flower language of plants and flowers, you will learn more about them and come to love them even more.
さらに日本人は、誕生日や記念日などの特別な日に家族や友達に花や植物をプレゼントします。そんなときに、だいじな人に伝えたいメッセージを考えて、おなじ言葉をもつ花や植物をえらんでプレゼントします。
プレゼントをわたすときに、伝えたい花言葉を教えてあげてからわたしてあげましょう！

Furthermore, Japanese people give flowers or plants to their family or friends on special days such as birthdays or anniversaries. They choose plants or flowers with the same language as the message they want to convey to their important person.

花屋や園芸店で買えることはもちろん、ホームセンター、100円ショップ、そしてアマゾンなどのネットでも買えます。
お店で買うなら、春〜秋の季節がいいでしょう。お店にはたくさんの観葉植物が用意されています。
値段もさまざまですが、ちいさな植物は1,000円以内で、中くらいの植物は約1,000〜5,000円です。お金もあまりかからずに、はじめられます。
You can buy them at flower shops and gardening stores, of course, but you can also buy them online at home centers, 100-yen shops, and even on Amazon.
If you buy them at a store, it is better to do so during the spring to autumn seasons.
There are plenty of houseplants available at stores, and prices vary, but small plants are usually under 1,000 yen, and medium-sized plants are around 1,000 to 5,000 yen. You can start growing plants without spending too much money.
それでは最後に、観葉植物を育てるのに必要な道具をいくつか紹介します。
Finally, I would like to introduce some tools necessary for growing houseplants.
- 鉢(Pot)：鉢とは植物をいれる容器です。植物の大きさにあう、ちょうどいい鉢を用意しましょう。
A pot is a container to put plants in. Prepare a pot that is just the right size for the plant. - 受け皿(Saucer)：受け皿は、鉢の下におきます。植物にあげたお水がこぼれないようにします。
A saucer is placed under the pot to prevent water from spilling out. - じょうろ(Watering can)：植物にあげるお水をいれる容器です。
A container used to water plants. - 土(Soil)：園芸店やホームセンターへいくと、たくさんの種類があります。どんな土がいいのか店員さんに聞いてみましょう。
There are many types of soil available at gardening stores and home centers. Ask the store clerk which soil is best for your plants. - 肥料(Fertilizer)：肥料とは、植物が元気に育つように土にまぜたりして使います。肥料も、たくさんの種類があるので、店員さんに聞いてみましょう。
Fertilizer is used to mix into the soil to help plants grow. There are many types of fertilizer available, so ask the store clerk which one is best. - 鉢底石(Pebbles)：鉢底石とは、鉢の底にいれる石のことです。石を鉢のなかにいれて、水や風のとおりをよくします。
Pebbles are placed at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
