奈良公園ってどんなところ？
What kind of place is Nara Park?
みなさんは奈良市という街を知っていますか？
日本の観光地として有名な京都や大阪のおとなり、奈良県にある、とてもしずかな街です。
今日はその奈良市にある『奈良公園』をご紹介したいと思います。
Do you know a city called Nara in Japan?
It is a very quiet town located in Nara Prefecture, which is famous for being the neighbor of Kyoto and Osaka, well-known tourist destinations in Japan.
I would like to introduce you to “Nara Park” located in Nara City.
奈良市は約1300年前日本の首都だった場所です。
そのため公園内にはおおくの歴史的な建造物や文化遺産があります。（たとえば日本最大の木造建築物として有名な東大寺の大仏殿など）
Nara City was the capital of Japan about 1300 years ago.
Therefore, there are many historical buildings and cultural heritage sites in the park, such as Todai-ji Temple’s Daibutsuden, which is famous as the largest wooden structure in Japan.
また春は桜、秋は紅葉など四季折々の自然のうつくしさもたのしむことができます。
Additionally, visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature in every season, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall.
公園内のお寺や自然もすばらしいのですが、じつはこの公園はほかに大変ユニークな魅力があるんです。

The temples and nature within the park are fantastic, but actually, there is a unique attraction in this park.

奈良公園の鹿
Deer in Nara Park
奈良公園内のおおくの場所で鹿が自由に生息していて、公園をおとずれる人々は、エサをあたえたり、鹿といっしょに写真をとったりすることができます。
この鹿たちは古くから神聖な存在とされ『神の使い』として地元の人々に大切にされてきました。
Many deer inhabit freely in many places in Nara Park, and visitors can feed them and take pictures with them.
These deer have been considered a sacred existence since ancient times and have been treasured by the local people as “messengers of the gods.”
現在では定期的に鹿の健康診断がおこなわれ、必要におうじて治療もおこなわれています。
また、公園内には鹿の管理事務所があり、鹿の繁殖や病気の予防などの管理もおこなわれています。
Nowadays, regular health checkups are conducted for the deer, and treatment is given when necessary.
There is also a deer management office in the park where breeding and disease prevention of deer are carried out.
鹿たちは人間を信頼しているため非常に人なつっこくて本当にかわいいです！
公園内で販売されている「鹿せんべい」というエサを購入して手に持っている人がいると、多数の鹿が近よってきてエサをねだったりします。
The deer are very friendly to humans and really cute!
When someone purchases “しかせんべい(deer crackers),” which are sold within the park, and holds them in their hand, many deer come close and beg for food.

人なつっこくてかわいいんですが、鹿には角がありますから小さいお子さんがいっしょのときは十分注意しながらエサをあげるようにしてください。
また奈良公園の鹿は『神様の使い』として地元の人に大切にされていますから、鹿の背中に乗ったりといったような いたずらはしないでくださいね。
Although they are friendly and cute, please be careful when giving them food if you have small children with you because they have antlers.
Additionally, Nara Park’s deer are treasured by the local people as “messengers of the gods,” so please do not play tricks such as riding on their backs.
奈良公園の鹿の行事
Deer Event in Nara Park
奈良公園では毎年10月に『鹿の角切り』という鹿の角を切る行事がおこなわれます。
観客席のある特別な会場に鹿をさそいこみ寝かしつけ、水をあたえて落ちつかせてから神官がノコギリで鹿の角を切りおとします。
その一連のダイナミックな行事を間近で見られるためこの行事は観光客にとても人気があります。
Every year in October, there is an event called “Shika no Tsunokiri” (Deer Antler Cutting) held at Nara Park where the antlers of deer are cut.
The event takes place in a special venue with seating for spectators, where the deer are lured in and put to sleep, given water to calm down, and then the priest uses a saw to cut off their antlers.
This dynamic event is very popular among tourists because they can see it up close.
鹿は『神の使い』ですから、角以外は傷つけないように慎重にすすめられ、切りおとされた角は神様にそなえられます。
鹿の角は人間で言うとおおきな爪のようなもので神経がとおっているということはないため、角を切られたあとに苦しむということはなく、すぐもとの生活にもどることができますので安心してくださいね！
The deer, considered messengers of the gods, are carefully handled to prevent injury other than the antlers, which are offered to the gods.
Since the antlers are like large nails and do not have any nerves, the deer do not suffer after they are cut and can return to their normal life right away. So please rest assured!

大阪市や京都市から電車で40分ほどです。奈良公園は奈良駅からは徒歩で約15分です。
奈良公園はお寺や自然をたのしめますし、なによりもかわいい鹿たちがみなさんを待っています！
When you visit Osaka or Kyoto for sightseeing, please take some time to visit Nara City.
It’s about a 40-minute train ride from Osaka or Kyoto. Nara Park is about a 15-minute walk from Nara Station.
Nara Park is a great place to enjoy temples, nature, and most of all, the adorable deer are waiting for you!
